I felt like the project was not the best designed because my group was asked to do so much for other groups when we had a lot to do and we didn’t even have enough time to get the Owl house in the tree. We barely had enough time to finish our painting on the owl house because every day we would be tasked with helping another group which I’m not saying is a bad thing but it didn’t really help our case. I also feel like the exhibition was really confusing because we didn’t really get what we were doing until the day of the exhibition so that could have been put together a lot better.
I came away with learning all about a sustainable house and what makes it sustainable. I had a few questions in my head such as How do solar panels work and what makes a house sustainable? But then he came and talked to us about both those and I learned about each of those questions. I learned a lot on the field trip when we went to the straw bale house because I had never seen something like that and I was really intrigued to learn about everything in that house and how the structure is stronger or weaker.
During the beginning of this project I would have said that sustainable design would be a design that is sustainable. Now I think sustainable design is something that doesn't need maintenance everyday to survive and will survive of the earth and what it has to supply for it. It is a structure that will stay alive off rain water and reusable energy. It is a garden that has a reusable water supply keeping the flowers and crops alive.
During the later stages of the project we practiced empathy interviews. They were just interviews on teachers and other students just asking them questions about our design that we had thought of. At that time I had a design of a pool/hot tub but then realized that would be way to complex for only having about a week and a half to work on it. I then realized that we should do something that is more rewarding to nature and animals. So then we had the idea of making a garden but during our stage of planning we thought that wouldn’t be rewarding enough for animals as well as nature so finally we came up with the idea of having a owls house with a garden on top of it for bees and butterflies.
Like I said we had two ideas before our final idea and those were the pool/hot tub with rainwater and with a solar panel heating system and a garden with reusable water to water the crops and flowers. We only had a week in a classroom and only 3 and a half hours each day of that week to come up with a idea dn have a poster and a diagram for exhibition and we did that three separate times and our last time was the winner. At exhibition we got lots of helpful feedback on how we could make it super nice for the owls and super pleasing for the eyes.
When we first started working on the actual design we made a prototype of the hot tub and we were tasked with having to prototype and make a poster explaining everything on the prototype. We then moved on to have an idea about making a garden and we did all the same steps and the we weren’t happy with how it turned because it didn’t have aesthetically pleasing look. Finally we came up with the idea of an owl house with a little help from our student teacher Emma Boone we had all our ideas worked out and we were ready to build our owl house with a garden on top for bees and butterflies.
I believe I used Refinement the most during this project. I believe this because During the project we thought we were done without painting or putting any of the hooks on but then we thought of the hooks to put it in the tree. Then we thought of painting it to look like a squid's tentacles were rapping around it and starting wherever. We then put flowers in the center of the squid’s tentacles. All these things I did were just little refinements that we needed to.
I need to grow in initiative. The reason I need to grow in initiative is pretty simple. I usually just don’t use my time wisely when I’m working by myself. Usually it turns out that I have to do everything last minute because I didn’t use my time wisely. This proves very well that I don't use my time efficiently and then have to do it all on the last day.
When things got hard there was always a solution but a time were things got hard was when we were working out a latch to keep the bottom of the owl house closed so we could open it and clean it out or we could keep it locked. First we tried making a piece of wood that had a notch in it and then putting a nail in it to keep it closed. We then thought of just not doing the latch to clean out the owl house. Then we went back to the first idea dn we all thought it was the best idea so we did that idea and went with that one. We solved the problem by going back and trying every idea on a seperate piece of wood.
At the end of the project we were unable to solve a problem and the problem was we didn’t have enough clamps for the wires that were going to be attached to the tree so we couldn’t get it up in the tree. We didn’t have any time to go and get any more of the latches so we looked on home depot’s website and they were out of stock anyways so it wouldn’t have mattered if we went to go get more at home depot. We all want to come on a weekend or during TPOL’s and get it up in the tree but we might not be able to. We were unable to solve this problem so it is not up in the tree yet.
When this project first started I thought I was going to build a greenhouse and it would be done within the first few days. I was then thinking about how we could make something that was more inviting to nature and animals so I joined a group that was going to make an owl house and we finished the owl house half way through the week. Then we started painting and then we had started putting the wires on and on the third wire we had figured out that we didn’t have enough clamps for the wire. So I thought success would just kind of come and be easy but now I realize that you will almost always run into a dilemma.
I would say get your work done and don’t procrastinate like my group did. Because then we figured out only on the last day that we didn’t have enough clamps for the wires because we procrastinated and only started that on the last day. When you are given the opportunity take it and don’t wait. Get it done when you have the chance so then when you finish with extra time you can refine and make it better than you thought it would turn out.
